The Environmental Management System (EMS) ISO 14001 is a international recognised standard developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). It provides a framework for organisations to effectively manage their environmental responsibilities and impacts. The ISO 14001 standard sets out the criteria for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continuously improving an Environmental Management System.

An Environmental Authorisation (EA) is an official document or permit issued by a government or regulatory authority that grants permission to individuals, companies, or organisations to carry out activities that may have an impact on the environment.

Scoping is a crucial early stage in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. It involves identifying and defining the boundaries and key elements of a proposed project or development that may have potential environmental impacts. The purpose of scoping is to determine the scope and level of detail required for the subsequent Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study.

a Waste Management License (WML) refers to an official authorisation or permit issued by a government or regulatory authority that allows an individual or a company to carry out waste management activities legally and responsibly. Waste management involves the collection, transportation, storage, treatment, recycling, and disposal of waste materials to ensure they are handled in an environmentally friendly and safe manner.

Section 24G of the NEMA, without affecting any criminal liability of a person who has acted in contravention of the above, makes provision for that person to submit an application to the relevant MEC/Minister, which, if successful, will enable that person lawfully to continue with the listed activity

No person may without a provisional atmospheric emission licence or an atmospheric emission licence conduct an activity(Sec 22)  •Commencement with such an activity is an offence in terms of section 51 and it carries penalty as provided in section 52 of AQA •AQA Amendment Act 20 of 2014: Section 22A provides for consequences of unlawful conduct of listed activity resulting in atmospheric emission – rectification process

a Water Use License Application (WULA) refers to the formal process by which an individual, company, or organisation applies for a license to use water resources for various purposes, such as industrial, agricultural, municipal, or recreational use. This process typically involves submitting an application to the relevant government or regulatory authority responsible for managing water resources in a particular region or country.

Basic Environmental Impact Assessments (BAs) are undertaken for activities that are listed in Listing Notice 1 of the NEMA EIA Regulations. These are smaller scale activities, and the impacts of these activities are generally known and can be easily managed. The Basic Assessment (BA) Report must provide the Competent Authority with sufficient information to consider the Application and to reach a decision in respect of the activities applied for.

An Air Quality Impact Assessment (AQIA) is a systematic evaluation carried out to understand and predict the potential impact of a specific project, activity, or development on the air quality in a given area. The assessment is usually performed to assess the potential effects of industrial processes, infrastructure projects, transportation systems, urban development, or other activities that may result in emissions of air pollutants.

An Environmental Management Plan (EMP) is a strategic and comprehensive document that outlines the procedures, practices, and measures an organisation or project will implement to manage and mitigate its environmental impacts effectively. It serves as a roadmap for maintaining environmental sustainability and minimising negative effects on the surrounding environment during the execution of specific activities, such as construction projects, industrial operations, or natural resource extraction.

A Waste Management Plan (WMP) is a strategic document that outlines the methods and procedures for managing waste generated from various sources in a systematic and environmentally responsible manner. These plans are typically created by governments, businesses, industries, or organisations to efficiently handle and minimise the impact of waste on the environment and human health.

A Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) is a comprehensive document that outlines strategies and measures to prevent stormwater pollution and minimise the impact of construction or industrial activities on water quality. It is a required document required by authorities under the NEMA.

An Emergency Response Plan is a comprehensive document that outlines the procedures, protocols, and actions to be taken during various emergency situations to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals and organisations. The primary goal of an Emergency Response Plan is to effectively manage and respond to emergencies promptly and efficiently, minimising potential risks, damages, and disruptions.

An emission inventory refers to a comprehensive database that quantifies the various pollutants and greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere by various sources within a specific region or country over a given time period. These inventories are crucial tools for understanding and managing air quality, climate change, and environmental pollution.

Emission modelling and reports refer to the process of quantifying and predicting the release of pollutants, greenhouse gases, or other substances into the environment from various sources such as industrial facilities, vehicles, power plants, and other human activities. The purpose of emission modelling is to understand the impact of these emissions on air quality, climate change, and human health.

The NAEIS is an online national reporting platform that hold both air pollutants and greenhouse emission inventories of the republic. All facilities listed under section 21 of the NEMA:AQA are compelled to report on the platform before end of March each year.

A Hazardous Waste Transporter must prepare a report for submission to the GWIS or to the Department quarterly.

A Hazardous Waste Transporter must submit a report indicated in above to the GWIS or to the Department (as per Schedule 2), not more than two weeks after the end of each quarter.  The above also applies to a Waste Treatment Facility

The South African Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting System (SAGERS) is a Greenhouse Gas Reporting Module of the National Emissions Inventory System (NAEIS).

This portal is a web-based platform for the registration and submission of GHG emissions data by category A data providers in terms of GHG Reporting Regulations 3 April 2017 as amended and promulgated under the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act No.39 of 2004.

The National Pollution Prevention Plans Regulations, 2017 (NPPP Regulations) were published, under sections 53(a), (o) and (p) read with section 29(3) of the NEM:AQA for implementation which prescribe the requirements for submission, approval and reporting of pollution prevention plans from a person conducting a production process set out in Annexure A to the Notice which involves emission of greenhouse gases in excess of 0.1 Megatonnes (Mt) annually, reported as carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2-eq).

Environmental auditing is a systematic and comprehensive process of evaluating an organisation's environmental performance and practices to assess its compliance with environmental regulations, policies, and standards. The purpose of an environmental audit is to identify potential environmental risks, impacts, and areas of improvement within an organisation's operations, facilities, and activities.

Quarterly / Bi-annual / Annual Reporting: Air Emissions Reports are required for companies possessing Atmospheric Emission License's (AELs). It is a compulsory requirement for companies to report air emissions, in accordance with an AEL, and at the specific frequencies required by the Licensing Authority.

Environmental inspection is carried out to check the organisation's level of compliance with environmental laws and regulations. To control their environmental impact, all investigations are taken into consideration, from on-site visits to data collection and analysis.
